Hen Profile – Treacle

Treacle is a Welsummer. She came to us aged 9 weeks in May 2010, and like her sisters, took some time to come into lay. But hens have their own personalities, and the three Welsummers have very different reactions to any given situation. Treacle was slow to trust us, taking several months to join the [...]

Mystery Roost

No more eggs in the run … but a different mystery. Ever since we’ve added the Welsummers to the brood, we’ve had problems with hens roosting in the nest box of the Cube. Each morning we have to go out and clear the mess before they start laying. I wasn’t looking forward to doing it [...]

Well that didn’t work …

The torch, that is … both evenings we’ve tried it, the batteries have died before the birds went to bed *doh* !! So we continue to go out and lift Sugar down after dark. I’ve charged up the rechargeable batteries now, so we’ll keep trying. Did I mention that I had an inspiration about Delia’s [...]

I wish …

I wish the Chooklets would start crouching … they’d be so much easier to catch!

Getting Anxious

The Chooklets have been escaping … their exit has been plugged, but not before they dared approach the Hen Garden – the resulting hubbub has left me more than a little anxious about integrating them! They are currently 16 weeks, so in theory I could begin the introductions any time now, but we have chicken [...]

Still nervous

Bless them – I spotted them all sitting together in a heap, and as I returned with my camera they spotted me and got the wriggles … Sugar is at the top, Treacle in the middle and Honey at the bottom of the picture … when I left, they were all facing the same way [...]

Moving House

The Chooklets are now in their new quarters … I’ve cleared away the fencing that allowed the hens onto the back bank and which gave the Chooklets the run of the Hen Garden, raked over the area of grass under the apple tree (how did the hens managed to dig so many stones out of [...]

Chooklet update

The Chooklets are now 12 weeks old. They are getting used to the daily routine … they are in their ark and run most of the day, but I sometimes let them out into the Hen Garden for an hour or two at the end of the day. They come running toward me whenever I [...]

First Day Out

I let the hens up onto the back bank this evening … Spot the Chicken … so while I was about it, I opened the door to the small run, too. All three Chooklets popped out fairly quickly. At first they just milled round the door, until Treacle (who is certainly the most adventurous if [...]

Naming Names

I had a good look at the Chooklets tonight to decide who’s who. I threw them a handful of corn and sunflower seeds so I could get a good look at them … they’re learning that seeing us often means nice things to eat, but after manhandling them the other evening to ring and clip [...]
