Charity is the gobby one! She trumpets her egg with a repetitive and raucous shout. Being of the second group in the pecking order, she likes to keep the younger ones under control, and tolerates little opposition. But she’s never challenged Bridget for the top spot as far as I’m aware – there’s just something [...]

Broody season
We’ve just come back from two weeks away to find Charity once again broody and rather underweight. I haven’t had opportunity to ask the lovely ladies if they noticed when she took to the nest box, but I imagine it was a good few days ago now. She looked well settled! So it’s out with [...]

Well, we tried …
… to leave Charity out overnight, but she was desperate to go back in. I kept finding her outside the Hen Garden – snuggled up against Verity on two sides of the netting! She must have flown over the gate or fence as after the first time I checked carefully that there were no gaps! [...]

Broody again
Charity is broody again … she sits in the nest box, hissing at all comers, gathering up their eggs the minute they are laid. When I turf her out, she is thirsty more than anything else, but a quick drink and a snack of any goodies on offer and she’s straight back into the nest [...]

Torches, torches …
(anyone else remember that carol?) Having had to gather up Charity and put her in the run for a couple of nights, for the last three nights we tried leaving a torch on in the run for her to find her way herself … today, we were at the football*, so weren’t at home to [...]

A little lost hen
5 eggs again today … and Patience definitely laid one of them! The Virtues are getting the idea of treats in the run now … we went out before dark today, so I called them in with a generous helping of corn, rice, mealworms and pellets, and although Verity took her time, she eventually came [...]

Leg Rings
Although we can tell the Virtues apart … it’s not easy and they have to be facing you! So yesterday we bought some more leg rings, and now Charity is wearing yellow, Patience blue and Verity red (seems to suit her temper).

Good ideas day
Day 5 – 3 eggs from the Virtues! The Virtues are proving to be reliable layers … and we had a double yolk from Charity a couple of days ago. The yolks are so pale though … need to get the hens free ranging to give the eggs some colour. Oh yes, I had to [...]

First Outing
Day 4 – 3 eggs from the Virtues I’d planned to keep the Virtues in for a week before letting them free range for a while in the garden … but first thing this morning, all three made it out of the greenhouse before the run was in place, and all three headed straight for [...]
