At the heart of the action …

The peck block in The Moppet House has become the centre of their social life …

Notice the girl at the back reinforcing the pecking order by having a go at a lower hen. They don’t all cope with pecking a moving block, but tactics include letting someone else do the pecking then stealing whatever hits the ground. A couple of days ago I watched as a hen lower down the order very skilfully kept the moving block between her and the top hen, knowing that as she pecked the block it would swing towards her superior hen who would then send it back in her direction!

Our original hen keeping adventure came to an end in January 2013, when a fox took our entire brood of hens. But don’t let that put you off … you can find the story at The Hen House Archive where there are still lots of stories, photos, and information about keeping hens I hope you'll find useful.

July 2018 … Four new girls arrive, two LS bantams and two Mille Fleur Pekins.

June 2018 … We had an extended heatwave, with daily temperatures in the 30s.
